When Richie Walsh took over Kentucky Indoor in August of 2016, he wanted to breathe fresh energy into the facility his family helped establish.

“This was the hub to keep all of the Central Kentucky teams and give them the ability to play all year round,” he said.

Walsh aims to keep it that way.

Last week, Kentucky Indoor announced its adult summer leagues were forming. Registration for the first summer session ends Thursday, May 10 at midnight. Learn more and register here.

The building at 404 Sporting Court in Lexington features two large indoor fields that can be used for a variety of sports but is mainly used for soccer.

While it has undergone a number of renovations over the years, none have been as big as its most recent that brought fresh paint, new televisions, an arcade and a more family friendly atmosphere.

Walsh also bought new scoreboards and revamped its website.

While business costs have increased over the years, Walsh was determined to maintain a lower price for players, so they can focus on the game they love without having to figure out how to justify the cost.

Walsh has 31 years of experience in soccer, growing up with the game, playing for Henry Clay High School and coaching at the club level.

“The indoor game does a lot without putting a tremendous amount of pressure on the players and the teams themselves. It’s not a Major League they’re trying to win, they’re coming in trying to keep in shape and keep their touch fresh on the ball,” Walsh explained.

Kentucky Indoor rents field space throughout the year to various camps such as the Challenger Sports Camp, a British program with coaches from oversees. The Kentucky Youth Soccer Association runs a Christmas break spring break camps there, as well.

While Kentucky Indoor’s main driver is soccer they are in talks to set up social leagues to try to diversify into other sports.

Kentucky Indoor holds adult league sessions year-round with youth leagues kicking it around November through March.

And a new adult indoor soccer tournament has been announced for later this year to bolster the facility’s winter adult and youth leagues. The tournament will take place on November 2-4, and sign-ups will begin on August 1st.
